Sania Mirza , she is definitely India's hottest female sports personality. Before Sania, tennis in India was an almost ignored sport. Its true we have wonderful players like Leander Paes and Bhupathi, but they were not able to take tennis to the masses . The media was also not very keen on wasting precious space and time for promoting tennis when most of the people were watching only cricket. It was at this juncture that Sania proved to the world that this nation can produce good tennis players as well and not just great cricket players.
Sania is the only female Indian player to have seeded in a Grand slam tournament. She holds the record of top WTA ranking by an Indian player by ranking 26 in the world. In a world dominated by american and european sportstars alone, with her fierce and aggressive playing style she has earned a niche for herself in the tennis world. She is also a wonderful doubles player and has played with the likes of Paes and Bhupathi.
In india, women were never much encouraged to play tennis. The reasons are many , the conservative attitude of our people and the dressing style of womens tennis are all factors. But Sania has broken all the precincts and has emerged as one of the top figures in indian sports arena. She has inspired many youngsters to play tennis and that means the future is looking good for indian tennis.
